Ask the Nutritionist: Gas and Bloating

Question: “I have recently noticed that after eating, I experience a lot of gas and bloating. What could be the cause and what can I do?”

Answer: I get this question a lot. First, you want to look at your diet and eating habits.

  • Do you drink a lot of cold water, especially with meals?
  • Do you eat a lot of cold or raw foods?
  • Are you eating on the run and not taking time to chew your food?
  • Experiencing a lot of stress?
These things can definitely dampen digestive function. Aging can also reduce digestive enzymes , which are necessary for digestive health. In addition, a bacterial imbalance (dysbiosis) can also contribute to gas and indigestion. At Ellicott City Pharmacy, we offer specialized testing such as food sensitivity testing and stool testing that can help determine possible root causes of digestive discomfort.

In terms of helpful supplements, I suggest taking the following three products to address gas/bloating:

  1. Digestive enzymes – Metagenics Azeo-Pangen Extra Strength (1 tablet with each meal)
  2. Probiotics – Thorne FloraMend (1 capsule daily)
