Ask the Nutritionist: Dry Hair

Question: “My hair is seems so dry and brittle. What can I do?”

Answer: Dry hair can be a symptom of hypothyroidism, so it is important to talk to your doctor about having your thyroid tested.

Sometimes dry hair can be the result of over-washing, using harsh styling products, using too much heat from a hair dryer, or from a vitamin/mineral deficiency. I recommend using natural hair products that won’t strip hair of its natural oils.

I also recommend taking a high quality multivitamin, such as Metagenics PhytoMulti. It supplies important hair nutrients such as vitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, iodine, and zinc.

I also suggest supplementing with fish oil, such as Nordic Naturals Pro Omega, and choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid, called Xymogen RegeneMax. Choline-stabilized orthosilic acid has been shown to promote keratin and elastin formation, which are two proteins that assist in hair strength.
